Job Title: Claims Counsel – Lawyers Professional Liability (LPL)
Job Summary
Seeking an experienced Claims Counsel to manage professional liability claims brought against attorneys and law firms. This mid to senior-level role involves overseeing cases from first notice to resolution, with claims ranging from moderate to high severity and exposure. The position requires legal analysis, litigation management, and strategic negotiation within a collaborative, fast-paced environment.
Responsibilities
- Manage a portfolio of LPL claims from inception to resolution, including conducting thorough investigations and assessing coverage and liability.
- Develop and implement strategic action plans to ensure timely and appropriate claim resolutions.
- Draft detailed coverage position letters, status updates, and resolution reports.
- Collaborate with and manage external counsel and vendors to ensure effective legal defense and cost control.
- Set, monitor, and adjust reserves in accordance with claim developments and company guidelines.
- Participate in mediations and settlement discussions, providing input or acting independently as appropriate.
- Communicate with insureds, brokers, underwriters, and internal stakeholders regarding claim status and developments.
- Review legal invoices to ensure compliance with billing standards.
- Support and mentor junior claims team members, as directed.
- Ensure consistent and accurate documentation in the claims management system.
- Maintain strict confidentiality of sensitive case information.
Qualifications/Requirements
- Active license to practice law in good standing.
- Minimum 5 years of relevant experience in insurance claims, litigation, or law firm practice; LPL or professional liability background preferred.
- Strong legal writing, analytical, and negotiation skills.
- Ability to manage multiple files in a deadline-driven environment.
- Proficient in coverage evaluation and litigation strategy.
- Comfortable with limited oversight and capable of independent decision-making.
- Commitment to high standards of client service and professional integrity.
- Willingness to travel for mediations, court proceedings, or client meetings as needed.
- Must obtain or be willing to obtain adjuster licenses as required.
Compensation Package
- Compensation: Between $150K-$200K (based on experience) + bonus opportunities.
