Job description

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Commercial Surety Underwriter to join our client's growing team. In this role, you will be responsible for underwriting a broad range of commercial surety bonds, managing a profitable book of business, and developing strong broker relationships. You will play a critical role in risk analysis, account management, and the overall growth strategy for our client's surety business in the U.S. market.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Accounting, or a related field (CPCU, AFSB, or equivalent designations a plus).
  • Minimum of 3–7+ years of commercial surety underwriting experience, preferably with a national or international carrier.
  • Strong financial acumen with the ability to interpret complex financial statements and conduct in-depth risk analysis.
  • Proven ability to develop and manage broker relationships and drive profitable growth.
  • Excellent negotiation, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Familiarity with surety-related systems and tools (e.g., bond issuance platforms, CRM systems).

Job Responsibilities:

  • Underwrite and manage a portfolio of commercial surety business, including contract and miscellaneous surety bonds.
  • Analyze financial statements, credit reports, and business plans to assess risk and determine appropriate bonding terms and conditions.
  • Make sound underwriting decisions in accordance with company guidelines and authority levels.
  • Maintain and grow agency and broker relationships to generate new business opportunities and retain existing accounts.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders including legal, claims, actuarial, and senior leadership to support underwriting strategy and account servicing.
  • Negotiate terms and pricing with brokers while ensuring alignment with underwriting profitability targets.
  • Stay current on industry trends, regulatory changes, and market developments to support informed underwriting decisions.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to junior underwriters and underwriting assistants as needed.
