Job Title: Underwriting Counsel
Prominent specialty insurance carrier is seeking an experienced Underwriting Counsel to join their growing Corporate Underwriting team. This role will provide legal guidance on complex risks, policy wordings, and regulatory compliance to support sound underwriting decisions. The Underwriting Counsel will help ensure policies are legally enforceable and aligned with the company’s risk appetite.
Responsibilities:
- Provide thoughtful and timely legal counsel to business partners in support of strategic and tactical business initiatives
- Support underwriting team in the review, development, and drafting of clear and accurate policy language
- Assist in the preparation and review of supporting insurance product documentation, including but not limited to comparisons, explanatory memorandums, ancillary agreements, marketing materials, and warranties
- Research and review legal/regulatory issues impacting or potentially impacting all specialty lines of business
- Consult and provide interpretation on language development and analysis
- Identify and mitigate risk to Company by finding legally compliant solutions to business issues
- Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with management and internal business clients, agents, outside counsel and Company partners
- Support regulatory and state filings group as needed
Experience and Qualifications:
- Admitted to practice law in at least one state in the United States with a JD from an accredited law school
- 1-3+ years of legal experience in either a law firm or in-house legal department, preferably in insurance
- Experience and/or knowledge of commercial/specialty insurance products is a plus
- Superior research, writing, and communication skills
- Exceptional organizational and time management skills, including the ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment
- Strong intellectual curiosity and desire to learn and develop
Compensation Package:
- Salary range: $130K - $150K, plus bonus and benefits
