Right and Wrong Questions to Ask During an Interview

Congrats! You landed an interview but now what? Everything on paper looks like you would be prefect for the role, but if you aren’t prepared for the actual interview, it is the easiest way to cost you the job.

Aside from presenting yourself professionally and conducting your research on the company, it is key that you are prepared with the right questions to ask the interviewer.  By preparing at least 4 solid questions it allows the interview to flow more into a conversation. Below are examples of some top questions to ask during an interview:

Examples of Questions TO ASK During an Interview

  1. What’s the most important thing I can accomplish in the first 60 days?
  2. What do you enjoy most about working here?
  3. Where would the company like to be in five years?
  4. What is the next step in the hiring process?
  5. What does a typical day look like?
  6. What are the skills and experiences you’re looking for in an ideal candidate?
  7. What are the biggest challenges that someone in this position would face?
  8. Why is this position available?
  9. Where have successful employees previously in this position progressed to?
  10. Can you tell me about the team I’ll be working with?
  11. How would you describe the work environment here?
  12. What won’t work in this position?

Variations for the LAST QUESTION you should always ask, and the only closed ended question

  1. Can I answer any final questions for you?
  2. Now that we’ve talked about my qualifications and the job, are there any concerns, or any answers I gave that I can clarify?

On the flipside, asking the wrong questions during an interview can damage your chance of moving forward in the interview process. You want to stay away from questions that are “self-serving” and take the conversation off of the actual opportunity.

Questions that you SHOULD NOT ASK during an interview

  1. Can I work from home for this position?
  2. How much paid vacation time do I get?
  3. What other benefits do you provide?
  4. What does this company do? – Shows you didn’t do your research
  5. Is passing a drug test required to be hired?
  6. May I arrive early or leave late as long as I get my hours in?

With the right questions prepared, along with arriving 10-15 minutes early and looking presentable, you will be one step closer to landing the job!
