Business Development Underwriter - E&S

Job Summary

Seeking a highly motivated and experienced Business Development Underwriter - E&S to join a growing team. This role offers the opportunity to manage an existing book of business and broker relationships, with a focus on maintaining and expanding accounts. The position is fully remote but requires residency and regular travel within the assigned territory. Compensation Package

  • Base Salary: $120,000 - $130,000 annually + bonus & profit sharing opportunities

Responsibilities

  • Agency Engagement: Build and strengthen relationships with agencies through education, outreach, and strategic collaboration.
  • Underwriting Excellence: Evaluate risks, set terms, and price policies within authority to meet profitability goals.
  • Performance Goals: Achieve targets for new business, rate changes, and underwriting quality.
  • Service Standards: Deliver timely and accurate quotes, endorsements, audits, and policy issuance.
  • Risk Management: Review inspections, audits, and endorsements to ensure accurate coverage and premium adequacy.
  • Mentorship: Provide guidance and support to junior underwriters to enhance team capabilities.
  • Reinsurance Coordination: Assess facultative reinsurance needs and manage cession processes.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Minimum of 5 years of proven success in commercial P&C underwriting; expertise in E&S and surplus lines is strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with independent agents and manage agency relationships.
  • Strong analytical, communication, and relationship-building skills.
  • Proficiency in Windows-based tools (Word, Excel, Outlook) and experience with paperless environments and online underwriting platforms (e.g., SAGE, Silver Plume, Reference Connect).
  • Willingness and ability to travel up to 50% within the assigned territory, including approximately 120 in-person agency visits annually (10 visits per month on average).
