Senior Contract Surety Underwriting Manager

Seeking an experienced Contract Surety Underwriting Leader to oversee a high-performing team, drive strategic growth, and shape underwriting excellence. This role is ideal for a seasoned surety professional who excels in relationship management, financial analysis, and team leadership.


Key Responsibilities

  • Analyze key business and financial reports essential to the underwriting process, including credit checks, bank agreements, and financial statements.
  • Evaluate risk quality and ensure decisions align with company underwriting guidelines.
  • Review and provide recommendations on underwriting submissions, including terms, conditions, and credit decisions.
  • Build and maintain strong partnerships with agents, brokers, and internal stakeholders.
  • Deliver exceptional customer service through clear, effective communication.
  • Maintain strong organizational discipline while managing multiple priorities.
  • Make timely, well‑informed decisions in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Demonstrate high integrity, professionalism, and ethical judgment.
  • Develop and execute strategic plans that support business goals and underwriting profitability.
  • Hold self and team accountable for achieving performance targets.
  • Recruit, coach, mentor, and develop underwriting talent.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Business, or a related field — or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Minimum 10 years of contract surety underwriting experience, including at least 5 years in a leadership or management role.
  • Progress toward or completion of professional designations a plus, such as AFSB, CPCU, CPA, or RPLU.
  • Demonstrated expertise in financial analysis, risk assessment, and relationship management.
  • Proven ability to lead teams, develop talent, and drive strategic initiatives.

Role Scope

This position manages a team of underwriters, contributes to strategic planning, sets performance expectations, and leads talent selection and development. The ideal candidate combines technical surety expertise with strong leadership and a forward‑thinking, strategic mindset.

 

Compensation: 170k-230k
