Job description

An established insurance organization is seeking an experienced Accountant to join its Finance function. This role supports both GAAP and statutory financial reporting, with a primary focus on non-technical accounting results and investment-related accounting activities. The position level will align with the individual’s accounting depth and prior insurance industry exposure.

This is a hybrid role based in Chicago.


Key Responsibilities

  • Review and validate non-technical journal entries and perform bank reconciliations

  • Prepare monthly financial reporting packages for internal and external stakeholders

  • Partner with Financial Planning & Analysis to ensure consistency between actuals and budgeted results

  • Reconcile and analyze investment activity using third-party investment data and custodian statements

  • Perform monthly balance sheet and income statement analyses, identifying and escalating discrepancies

  • Prepare statutory financial statement components, including core schedules, investment disclosures, and related notes

  • Support audit processes by coordinating documentation requests and required schedules

  • Interpret and apply evolving accounting and regulatory standards across GAAP, statutory, and international frameworks

  • Collaborate with actuarial partners on loss-related balances, including reserves and incurred-but-not-reported activity


Additional Responsibilities

  • Respond to ad hoc financial and reporting requests

  • Contribute to process improvements and special projects as assigned

  • Support broader finance team initiatives as business needs evolve


Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting (Master’s preferred)

  • CPA certification is a plus but not required

  • Prior insurance industry accounting experience is required

  • 4–6+ years of progressive accounting experience

  • Intermediate to advanced Excel skills and strong proficiency with Microsoft Office

  • Experience with statutory reporting tools or insurance-focused financial systems

  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple deadlines

  • Proactive, adaptable, and collaborative working style

  • Effective communicator capable of engaging across teams and functions
