Senior Underwriter / Underwriter
Job Summary
Seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Underwriter / Underwriter to join an Underwriting Department. This full-time, exempt position plays a critical role in evaluating and processing insurance applications, ensuring compliance with underwriting policies, and providing exceptional service to policyholders. The ideal candidate will possess strong analytical judgment, excellent communication skills, and a deep understanding of insurance underwriting practices.
Compensation Package
- Hiring Range: $80,000 - $123,000 (dependent on experience and location)
- Comprehensive benefits package, including health insurance, and paid time off.
Responsibilities
- Apply underwriting guidelines and exercise sound judgment to evaluate and process applications from prospective insureds and renewals.
- Provide advice on coverage issues to policyholders and respond to rating and coverage inquiries.
- Identify marginal risks and prepare files for review by the Underwriting Manager or Physician Review.
- Actively solicit new insureds and provide quotations to acceptable applicants.
- Collaborate with other departments, including Marketing & Sales, Risk Management, and Claims, to ensure proper coverage and services are provided.
- Draft and issue declination letters to unacceptable applicants.
- Prepare policy declarations, endorsements, and other policyholder-specific documents.
- Evaluate requests for optional coverage and coverage changes.
- Represent the company at industry events, including the AAO Annual Meeting and other regional, state, or national meetings.
- Train and mentor underwriting team members, providing feedback and delegating administrative tasks as needed.
- Participate in company-wide initiatives and special projects as assigned.
- Work closely with Risk Management and Accounting to resolve practice and payment issues.
Qualifications/Requirements
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.
- Minimum of 5 years of insurance underwriting experience preferred.
- Experience in medical malpractice insurance is highly desirable.
