Commercial Department Director
Job Summary
Seeking an experienced and dynamic Commercial Department Director to lead and drive the strategic, financial, and operational success of the Commercial Insurance Department. This senior leadership role is pivotal in shaping the department's growth, ensuring service excellence, and fostering innovation. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in commercial insurance, including writing, servicing, and managing complex accounts, as well as leading high-performing teams. This is an in-office position, with relocation support available.
Compensation Package
- Base Salary: $125,000+ (DOE)

Responsibilities
Primary Objectives:
- Drive profitable commercial premium and policy count growth through personal production, team training, and department planning.
- Identify, propose, and execute new commercial growth initiatives.
- Strengthen and expand carrier partnerships aligned with agency growth goals.
- Protect and improve commercial retention and renewal outcomes.
- Provide consistent, data-driven reporting and insights to the executive team.
- Develop, lead, and retain a high-performing commercial insurance team.
- Maintain accurate, actionable data within Applied Epic to support executive decision-making.
Core Responsibilities:

Commercial Strategy & Leadership:
- Define and execute the overall direction, structure, and performance of the Commercial Insurance Department.
- Build and implement annual and quarterly department plans with clear growth targets and operational priorities.
- Proactively develop and present innovative ideas for commercial growth, including vertical strategies and process improvements.

Executive Planning & Reporting:
- Develop measurable department plans aligned with strategic goals.
- Track progress against KPIs and provide structured reporting to the executive team.
- Present growth proposals, carrier opportunities, and recommendations to support leadership decision-making.

Carrier Partnerships & Market Expansion:
- Identify and recommend new carrier appointments and market relationships.
- Maintain strong senior-level relationships with carriers and bring forward partnership opportunities.

Growth & Sales Leadership:
- Drive new business production, account expansion, and cross-sell opportunities.
- Support and coach producers on pipeline management, submission quality, and closing strategies.

Renewals, Retention & Service Oversight:
- Own commercial retention metrics and renewal timelines.
- Ensure proactive renewal workflows are executed consistently and accurately.

Team Leadership & Development:
- Lead and mentor commercial producers, account managers, and support staff.
- Define roles, responsibilities, and performance expectations.
- Support hiring, onboarding, and ongoing development of team members.

Operational Excellence:
- Own commercial workflows within Applied Epic.
- Partner with Operations leadership to optimize processes and ensure documentation standards are upheld.

Compliance & Risk Management:
- Ensure adherence to state regulations, carrier requirements, and internal compliance standards.
- Support audit readiness and E&O risk mitigation.
Qualifications/Requirements
- Licenses/Certifications: Active Property & Casualty (P&C) license required.
- Experience: Minimum of 8 years in commercial insurance, with independent agency/broker experience.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in Applied Epic software.
- Account Expertise: Experience with mid-market accounts, contractors, and professional services, with premiums under $20K.
- Book of Business: Proven ability to manage a book of business with $850K in premium and 450 accounts.
- Soft Skills: Self-starter, go-getter, strong leadership, excellent communication, and strategic thinking.
